The crayons we know today were invented in the1900s. The idea to blend wax with pigment ismuch older though. It is thousands of years old.People used to mixed beeswax and pigment.They used this to color on stone. Europeans alsoused early forms of crayons. Americans made thefirst child-friendly crayons.
Joseph Binney started a company in 1864. He made lampblack. This was a color pigment. It was made from burnt oil soot. Binney’s son Edwinand his cousin Harold Smith then took over the company 20 years later. They made more colors.They made red pigments for barn paint. They also made carbon black for car tires. An ad for Crayola crayons in 1905's. The two cousins kept creating. They made pencils and chalk for schoolrooms. Finally came color crayons. Their first box had eight colors. It was sold for just five cents. Edwin’s wife came up with the name Crayola. It combined two words.The first word is craie. This is the French word forchalk.
